Venice, Utah - Betty Jean passed from this life into the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ on Wednesday, July 4, 2018, one day short of her 85th birthday. Her death was an unexpected loss for her family, her church and her friends, but a great gain for Betty, whose faith included the promise of eternal life with God in Heaven. Betty was born July 5, 1933 in Portsmouth, Ohio, a daughter of Mark Fredrick and Grace Heisler Piatt. She had four brothers and three sisters. She overcame the challenge of childhood illnesses through the loving care and prayer of her parents, brothers and sisters. She shared pleasant and often humorous stories from a happy childhood. Betty married Homer Ralph Mitchell on November 24, 1955 in Elyria, Ohio. Their first son, Homer Ralph Mitchell, Jr. was born on April 9, 1957. They lived in Ohio until moving to San Pedro, California in 1963. Their son, Carlos Roy Mitchell was born August 20, 1965. They lived in Huntington Beach, California before moving to Venice, Utah in 1994. Venice was her home for 24 years. Betty was employed as an apartment manager and custodian for several years, but she most enjoyed being a homemaker. She loved to cook and entertain. She loved cats and always kept a bowl of dry cat food on her porch. She cherished her blue 1979 Ford Fairmont coupe. Homer and Betty became faithful members of the Richfield Assembly of God after moving to Sevier County. Betty came to be treasured as an honorary "grandmother" to children in her church. In recent years, Betty arrived at church with treats and gifts for her "kids". Her loving husband, Homer, preceded her into the presence of Jesus on October 31, 1999. She is survived by one sister, Ginny Virginia Griffith; her sons: Ralph and Carlos; granddaughters: April and Melissa; and great-grandsons: Skylar and Jared. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. in the Springer Turner Funeral Home Chapel, 260 North 400 West in Richfield, where friends may call for viewing Saturday morning from 9:00 to 10:30 prior to the services. Burial will be in the Venice Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
