Jack W. Herring Our loving father, Jack Wiley Herring, age 82, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2003 in Richfield, Utah. He was born February 7, 1921 in Elsinore, Utah, a son of Ransom Wiley and Elsie Ida Moore Herring. Jack was raised in Elsinore and after completing high school, he attended an Agricultural College in Cedar City. He was inducted into World War II in April of 1942. While serving in the Army, he was the Chaplin’s Assistant and a Technical Sargent. He was honorable discharged in November of 1945. He then continued his education at Utah State University in Logan where he received his master’s degree in Agricultural Genetics. After graduation, he worked with many different organizations, developing many programs in Agricultural Genetics, including working for the United Nations in departments of foreign agricultural organizations. This work took him over seas for five years. He was very successful in his work, where he was able to meet and work well with many people of different cultures and nationalities. He was also able to travel around the world. After returning from Pakistan, he moved to Mt. Pleasant, where he was the County Weed Supervisor for many years. Jack had a very fulfilling life in which he accomplished many great things, some of them being commander of his VFW Post, Sanpete County Agent, and he received an award for outstanding week supervisor in 1991. He was an active member of the LDS Church, where he had served as Bishop and a Branch President. His greatest accomplishment was successfully raising seven daughters and one son. He had a ear for music, with out ever taking a lesson, he excelled at playing the guitar and singing. He also enjoyed spending time in the garden with his son, Jon. Jack was a positive influence in many people’s lives. It was impossible to know him, without loving him. He is survived by his children: Karla and Voin Campbell, St. George; Kathie and Larry Sorenson, Olympia, WA; Randa and Larry Black, Ephraim; Nicole and Pete Smith, Koosharem; Jacci and Joe Seely, Cedar City; Sabrina Herring, St. George; Elsie Herring and Jon Herring, both Koosharem; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother: Major S. and Lucille Herring, Temple, TX; Margaret Herring, Richfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Elmo Herring. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 11, 2003 at 1:00 P.M. in the Springer Turner Funeral Home Chapel, 260 North 400 West, in Richfield, where friends may call for viewing Friday morning from 11:30 to 12:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Sevier VFW Post #5050 will be in the Richfield City Cemetery under the direction of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah.
