Richfield/Provo, Utah – Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Betty Lucretia Nebeker Oldroyd, age 89, passed away October 24, 2022, in Provo, Utah. She was born July 19, 1933, in Sacramento, California, a daughter of DeWayne and Lucretia Graham Nebeker. Betty’s mother passed away when Betty was only two years old. She was sent to live with an Aunt Myrtle up behind the Capitol on gravity hill in Salt Lake City until Aunt Myrtle got cancer and couldn’t take care of her, and Betty subsequently ended up living with an Aunt Genevieve in Richfield. She graduated from Richfield High School, Class of ’51 and then went to Fullerton College in Fullerton, California and got an Associate of Arts degree.
Betty met and married LaVar Kay Oldroyd June 18, 1955, in Richfield, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Los Angeles LDS Temple March 13, 1978. They lived in Brea, California, where they raised their three children, Mitch, Teri, and Cory. They were happily married for 25 years when Kay died suddenly August 11, 1980. Betty never re- married, nor even though about it, even though she was a widow for over 42 years. She sold her home in Brea in 1992 and moved to Utah, living in Pleasant Grove with her son, Mitch, for a few months, then she bought a home in Richfield. She loved living in Richfield and found many friends and formed many lasting relationships. Betty moved to Provo in 2018 to be closer to her family.
Betty was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as Relief Society President, Relief Society Teacher, Sunday School Teacher, Mia Maid and Laurel Teacher, Cub Scout and Weblos Scout leader. She was a Temple worker in the Los Angeles Temple and the Manti Temple for over 20 years.
When the kids were growing up, Betty served as PTA President and Organizer and also as a substitute teacher. While she lived in Richfield, she was a Guide for the Native American Display at the Fremont Indian State Park in Clear Creek Canyon.
Betty enjoyed gardening, crafts, knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, and she loved the lost art of canning her own fruits and vegetables. She enjoyed going on picnics and wilderness adventures with her family. She was very proud and enjoyed showing anyone that came to visit, the Wall Of Pictures of her kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and family members. It covered an entire wall of her family room.
Betty is survived by her two children: Mitch and Pati Oldroyd of Bluffdale; Teri and John Woods of Wytheville, Virginia; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kay; her youngest son, Cory Dee Oldroyd; and a brother, Carl DeWayne and Irene Nebeker.
