Beverly Young

July 26, 1923 — December 1, 2020

Gunnison, Utah - Carla Beverly Lewis Young was born on 26 July 1923 in Marion, Summit County Utah to Gilbert & Pearl White Lewis. She passed away at age 97 on 1 December 2020 at a nursing home in Utah Valley. She was the eldest of five children and the only daughter in the family. Her brothers have all passed away except for the youngest, Kent Lewis. The family lived on a dairy farm of about 100 acres in Kamas Valley. Beverly said she didn’t even know about the Great Depression because they had everything they needed on the farm. She loved Kamas Valley. Beverly was an active girl and preferred being outdoors to the domestic chores inside the home. She told many stories of the wolves and bears in the valley in early times and the difficulty of getting back and forth from the farm to the town of Kamas for school and other needs. She met the love of her life Marion Young in high school and they both graduated from South Summit High, where Beverly was crowned Miss South Summit. Marion joined the Navy during WW11 and Beverly enrolled at BYU where she majored in physical education. They were married in 1945 following the war and had nine children. Beverly loved playing the piano and served for many years as a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ward organist. She played the piano for 3 years each Sunday at the Correctional Facility in Gunnison. She also served as a primary teacher and Relief Society President. They lived in Murray Utah until 1964 when they moved down to Sterling in Sanpete County. In 1993, Marion and Beverly accepted a church calling to serve as senior missionaries in the Fresno area of California. They drove from their home in Sanpete County Utah, and arriving on the 10th of May began working in the Laotian community in downtown Fresno. They knew that Marion had adult diabetes but were unaware that he had a tumor developing in his brain. Beverly purchased a Franklin Planner in which she kept a journal of their mission. Laotian tradition required a reverence of their elders and they especially liked Marion, always asking him to baptize the converts in the community. He had to pronounce the long names several times before getting them right. Then in August, they were transferred to the Reedley and Sequoia area to work among English speaking people living there. Beverly wrote in her journal that she was happy to get out of the hot city but she would miss her "Lao people". They were able to teach many families and to baptize before returning home to Sanpete in February of 1994 due to Marion’s health. Marion continued to struggle with his diabetes, but they were able to serve as ordinance workers in the Manti temple together which they greatly enjoyed. He died in May of 2016 at age 94. After his death, Beverly moved to Utah Valley to be near her daughters. Beverly was happy, outgoing and very friendly. She shared her strong testimony often. Beverly loved her Savior Jesus Christ and taught her children and others the gospel. She has returned to her eternal home to be near the ones she so loved and served. The family wishes to thank the Gunnison 1st Ward for their many, many acts of kindness and concern through the years. They were always stepping in to visit and to serve. Surviving children include Gary and Joy Young of Roy, Brent and Becky Young of Wellsville, Randy and Jerolyn Young of Gunnison, Mike and Mary Young of Utah and Arizona, Carla (Clair Thomas, deceased) Yardley of Spanish Fork, Dan and Stephanie Young of Gunnison, Sherie and Mike Crandall of Springville, and James and Mindy Young of Meridian, Idaho. Marion and Beverly have numerous descendants; brothers: Kent and Verona Lewis of Draper; Sherald (Deceased) and Sandy Lewis of Auburn, Wyoming. A son named Johnny died at age 12. She is also preceded in death by three grandsons: Clint Anthony Young, Lance W. Young and Cory Yardley; and brothers: Lynn and Beth Lewis, and Sterling Lewis.
