Bill Powell

Lovell, Wyoming - Clyde William (Bill) Powell died May 26, 2011, in Loa, Utah. Bill was born March 19, 1923, in Billings, Montana, a son of Alva A. and Lila Rogers Powell. He was one of nine children: Ellsworth, Ray, Percy, Harold, Clarice, Inez, Montana and Donna. Bill graduated from Lovell High School in May of 1941. He was Senior Class President, and he excelled in sports and band. In December, 1941, he joined the United States Army Air Corp and served in World War II as a photo recon pilot. He flew 70 missions in a P38 over Europe. He was discharged at the end of the War. Bill married Lucy Robertson on March 22, 1945 in Billings, Montana. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple, June 23, 1970. They were married for 66 years. To this union was born: Linda, Monte, John, Florence, Lila, Debra and Roger. Bill and Lucy made their home in Lovell and owned and operated Bill Powell’s clothing store for 35 years. He was active in the Lovell community, serving on the North Big Horn Hospital for 20 years, chairman and helped develop Rose City West and Georgia Pacific, President of the Lovell Rod and Gun Club, lifelong member of the Lovell Chamber of Commerce, honorary lifetime member of the VFW and a member of over 50 years of the American Legion. From 1945 to 1977, Bill organized Memorial Day Services and military grave side services for area veterans. He became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on May 31, 1967, and later served as First Councilor to Bishop Keith Allred and then as Bishop of the Lovell First Ward. Bill is survived by his wife, Lucy, five daughters: Linda Dayley, Monte Laing, Florence Thomas, Lila May and Debra Archibald, and a son, Roger, 35 grandchildren and 69 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren and his 8 siblings. Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 3, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. in the Lovell L.D.S. Stake Center, where friends may call for viewing Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Lovell American Legion Post and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post will be in the Lovell City Cemetery.
