Bountiful, Utah - Claud Darwin Mangum, age 92, died of causes incident to age in Bountiful, August 22, 2009, leaving a legacy of service and total devotion to family, country and church. He was born May 27, 1917, in a log cabin on Pine Creek Ranch, a son of Joseph Harvey and Melinda Johannah Johnson Mangum in Bicknell, Wayne County, Utah. As he grew up, his parents taught him the value of hard work, a good education, and the importance of righteous living. He married Hazel Dawn Turner in the Manti Temple June 18, 1941. Claud is survived by his wife, Dawn, and their four children: Claudine and Wayne Cable, currently serving an LDS Mission in Wales; Richard T. and Carole Mangum, currently serving an LDS Mission in Austria; Shawna Lou and Jack Brooks of Centerville; Darwin Karl and Maureen Mangum of Vernal; 22 grandchildren and 61 great-grandchildren. He had five brothers and five sisters, all preceding him in death. Claud, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, served as a missionary in Texas and as a missionary in Uruguay with his wife, Dawn. He was a church leader everywhere he was stationed in the military, a Regional Representative in Argentina, a Mission President of the Florida, Ft. Lauderdale Mission, in addition to many other positions of service. Claud graduated from USU in education, earned a Master’s Degree from George Washington University in International Affairs, and his PhD. from the U of U. After teaching seminary for several years, he served his Country for 26 years as an Army officer. He served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. After retirement, he was a teacher, guidance counselor and principal in Davis School District. He provided many hours of service as Director of Davis County Mental Health. The family would like to thank all who provided loving care for Claud in his final months at North Canyon Care Center and VistaCare Hospice. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 28, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. in the Mueller Park 4th LDS Ward Chapel, 1320 East 1975 South, in Bountiful, where friends may call for viewing from 12:00 Noon to 1:30 P.M. prior to the services. Grave side services with military honors accorded by the Harold Brown American Legion Post #92 will be Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. in the Bicknell Cemetery in Bicknell, Utah, under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah. In lieu of flowers, those who desire, may make a donation to the Perpetual Education Fund in memory of Claud D. Mangum.
