Richfield, Utah - Clyde Howard Lay, age 65, of Richfield, passed away November 6, 2009, in Salt Lake City, due to complications following a long but successful battle with cancer. In the end he slipped away peacefully, held in the arms of his loving wife and surrounded by his children. Clyde was born September 23, 1944, in Richfield, Utah, a son of Ervin Clive and Ethel Fay Rigby Lay. He grew up in Circleville and attended Piute High School. During his youth he helped his father and brothers in a meat locker where he developed a strong work ethic. Clyde married Marcia Rae Oviatt, October 9, 1965 in Salt Lake City, Utah Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple. He then went on to study civil engineering at the University of Utah. He was a Professional Engineer and had a long and productive career with the federal government. Engineering allowed him to develop his strong attention to details. This complimented his natural artistic abilities. Throughout his life he developed these abilities through painting and later in life as an accomplished stained glass artist. His pieces were admired by many. He loved to hunt and fish! Some of his greatest joys were found in the outdoors where he hiked the red-rock, juniper covered cliffs of southern Utah looking for the perfect bobcat set. Trapping became his favorite, winter-time, adventure that he would extend throughout the year in thoughts and plans for the upcoming season. His nine grandchildren have many wonderful memories of grandpa and spending time with him at “Grandpa Land” in Richfield. Grandpa kept an immaculate garden, where his grandchildren loved to come pick peas with him. He took great pride in his yards and trees. Clyde was most proud of his service to the Lord while serving in the Sapporo Japan Mission with his loving wife, Marcia. His journal and letters home tell of a man imbued with the spirit of missionary work. Although his time in Japan was cut short by illness, he touched the lives of many of the Elders and Sisters, along with many of the members of the Kotoni Ward. At his cherished home in Richfield, Clyde served as a counselor in the Richfield 16th Ward High Priest group, and as a missionary at the Bishop’s store house. He enjoyed service and truly felt the spirit of Christ. Some of the greatest blessings in life came to him while giving service to friends and neighbors. He enjoyed helping them prune their fruit trees, farm and irrigate. Clyde is survived by his loving wife, Marcia, of Richfield; children: Kimberly (Roger) Jackson, of Lindon, UT; Shannon (Dustin) Atkinson, of Herriman, UT; Clyde (Heather) Lay, of Kuna ID; sister and brothers: Merna (Ralph) Ray of Olathe, Colorado; Robert (Lorna) Lay of Circleville; Henry (Barbara) Lay of Vancouver, Washington; sister-in-law: Mary Ann Adams of Nebraska.
