Darrel C. Hintze

Richfield, Utah - On May 24, 2019, Darrel Call Hintze celebrated his 85th birthday with his twin sister, Carol. They were born in their grandmother’s home in Holladay, Utah to Leslie Teancum and Audra Call Hintze in 1934. He was a gentleman and let Carol come first, and when needed, she reminded him that she was the oldest. This time Darrel was first, he passed away peacefully on August 10, 2019, at his home in Richfield, UT from causes incident to age. He lived with his parents and 3 siblings in Holladay, Utah. He graduated from Granite High School, he served in the U.S. Army in Korea and then served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denmark. Shortly before leaving, he met his eternal companion, Frances Gardner. She fell in love with his 1953 candy apple red Buick convertible first and then with him. They married in the Mesa LDS Temple on July 23, 1958. They have 7 children. Darrel graduated from Utah State University with a bachelor’sdegree in Range Management and went to work for the U.S. Forest Service. While working for the Forest Service he and his growing family lived in Wyoming and Idaho before moving to Richfield in 1977. He started a program to bring troubled youth to Gooseberry to work on trail maintenance and other jobs in the forest. He also helped start the 3rd grade conservation trip to Gooseberry and contributed to many nightmares caused by the legend of Annie Bangs. He later earned his master’s degree in Social Science and went on to work for the State of Utah - Youth Corrections. He also worked as a realtor. He was involved with many community organizations such as the Lion’s club, Kiwanis club, Civil Air patrol, a volunteer EMT and was the national director for the Jaycees. Darrel not only loved and appreciated listening to beautiful music, but he loved to sing as well. While attending USU he was a member of the Delta Phi Kappa Chorus. He continued to sing with his wife and family and always encouraged them to develop their musical talents. He was an expert gardener, he worked hard to keep his yard and garden beautiful. Not only did he plant a garden in his yard but planted other gardens as well. He sure knew how to spread the manure. We all enjoyed the harvest of those efforts. He also enjoyed many hours of wood working making beautiful cedar chests and clocks, as well as picture frames for Frances's many paintings. But you were wise not to ask him for home improvement advice. The great love of his life besides his wife and family, was the great outdoors. He loved to go hunting and camping, but especially fishing. He spent many hours with his family and friends enjoying the outdoors.Darrel hauled his trailer places no one else dared go. (Probably for good reason)He was not only a great fisherman but also a great fisher of men.Darrel and Frances fulfilled a life-long dream and served a mission together in Denmark after serving a mission in Odessa, Ukraine. He had a strong love for both countries and the people he met and they became life-long friends. He was a great example by his love of missionary work and by all the acts of service he performed for his family and friends. Darrel is survived by his wife Frances and their children: Kai Hintze (Leigh) West Jordan, UT; Kirsten Shaw (Mike) Mesa, AZ; Kurt Hintze (Tamara) Marysville, WA;Tove Curtis (Brian) Sierra Vista, AZ; Denise Ames (Dan) Logan, UT; Erika Booth (Tarl) West Jordan, UT; Inge Berndt (Willie) North Salt Lake, UT;twin sister Carol Jackman (Dean) South Jordan, UT; brother Les Hintze (Shaunne) Sandy, UT; sister Sharon Boam (Wayne) Taylorsville, UT; and his BFF Bill Allred, Richfield. They have 24 grandchildren and 7½ great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew Hintze and his parents Les and Audra Hintze. Memorial service will be held, Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 11:00 AM. in the Richfield East LDS Stake Center, 850 North 500 East in Richfield, where friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the VFW Sevier Post #5050 and the Utah Honor Guard was in the Richfield City Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
