Monroe, Utah - Donald Alvin Holgate, age 81 of Monroe, died peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loved ones on Tuesday, May 24, 2016. He was born in Tempe Arizona on December 6, 1934, a son of William Alvin and Agnes Hansen Holgate. He married his beloved sweetheart, Val Jean Barney, September 7,. 1952 in Elsinore, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, in May of 1953. Don was a dedicated Scout Master for over 20 years. He took his boys canoeing in the back country of Yellowstone, and many other interesting trips including a 50-milehike. He enjoyed taking his family camping and fishing and loved the outdoors. Don was always looking for “that perfect fishing hole”. He worked as a carpet layer and had the privilege of laying carpet for many general authorities. He was able to visit and spend the day with David O’Makay and Ezra Taft Benson. Donald was an avid gardener and spent many hours on cultivating a beautiful garden and yard. He especially loved tomatoes and would grow up to a hundred plants each summer. He enjoyed canning his garden abundance along with his wife Val Jean. Donald leaves behind his beloved sweetheart of 64 years, Val Jean Holgate of Monroe; children: Dr. Katrina and Craig Miller of Salt Lake City; Donna and Steven Thompson of Monroe; William Holgate of Jackpot, Nevada; Mary and Galen Gay of Elsinore; Tish and Stan Jones of Richfield; Andrew and Heather Holgate of Rupert, Idaho; 21 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; twin brother Ronald Holgate of Bakersfield, CA; and his sister Barbara and Dan Dickerson of Bountiful. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Agnes and William Holgate; a son, Chad Holgate; a granddaughter, Jennifer Holgate; and a great-granddaughter, Leta Batterman. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. in the Monroe 4th LDS Ward Chapel where friends may call for viewing Tuesday morning from 11:00 to 12:30 prior to the services. Burial will be in the Monroe City Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah
