Centerfield, Utah - Donald Frank Hammond, age 88, our loving husband and father, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 in Centerfield. He was born May 19, 1920 in Fayette, Utah, a son of John Milton and Catrina Christine Jensen Hammond. He was a farmer and rancher and lived his entire life in Gunnison Valley, with the exception of three and a half years when he served in the US Air Corp during World War II. On March 1,1947, Donald married Lois Verna Metcalf in Centerfield, Utah. Five children were born to that union: Jenny, Mary, Jay, Ronald and Julie. Donald achieved in life what was most important to him: a family to love and who loved him; and a ranch where he could work hard to provide for them. Donald leaves behind a legacy of children, grandchildren, friends and acquaintances who have been touched by an example of hard work, of honesty, of integrity and of love. Donald is survived by his wife of 62 years, his five children: Jenny and Lowell Rex of Camarillo, CA; Mary and Mike Young of Sweet, ID; Jay and Shawna Hammond of Phoenix, AZ; Ronald and Mindy Hammond of American Fork; Julie and Ron Wood of Cedar City; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren and 5 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and three sisters: Henry, Milton, Lowell, Christy, Thelma and Melba; and 1 granddaughter. Funeral services honoring Donald's life will be held on Monday, May 11, 2009 at 12 Noon in the Centerfield 1st LDS Ward Chapel, where friends may call for viewing Monday morning from 10:00 to 11:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Centerfield American Legion Post #105 will be in the Gunnison City Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
