Dunk Taylor

Fremont/Bicknell, Utah - Ross Duncan "Dunk" Taylor died in Fremont, Utah on his 87th birthday. He was born March 17, 1927, in Fremont, Utah the ninth child of twelve, and 3rd son of William Gross and Emily Bell Duncan Taylor. Dunk married Vera Snow, August 6, 1949, in Teasdale, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Manti Temple, February 14, 1951. Vera died on November 26, 2000. Dad took loving care of mom for years in her decline due to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He always said he would have no regrets and he tended her so well he didnt have regrets. They are parents of six children and one foster son. Dunk married Roma Ellett Kenney in Bicknell, Utah on September 20, 2003. They lived in Bicknell. Dunk was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a member of the Fremont Ward Bishopric during the construction of the new church house in 1964. He was active in Scouting, Sunday School, home teaching, and served in many callings. Dunk was active in civic endeavors including, Wayne Riding Club as President and Drill Master. While drill master the Wayne Riders won the Days of 47 Street Parade and Drill Competition. He was a member of the Soil Conservation Board, earning the award of Utah State Farmer of the Year. He was also and member of the FSA Board. He was an active American Legion member. He served in World War II in the Navy on the air craft carrier, USS Salvoy Island, at the age of 17 in the Pacific Theatre. Horses were his love along with Charolis cows. He worked hard to make a beautiful farm out of sand, rocks, brush, washes, and floods on Government Creek by Bicknell Bottoms. He loved dutch oven mutton. But most of all: kids, grand kids, great-grand kids, and just kids in general. He was unselfish never needing anything for himself. He loved Wayne County never wanting to be anywhere else. He was a builder. Dunk is survived by his wife Roma, Payson, Utah; children, DeRae and Robert Fillmore, William Charles and Cherlyn Sorenson Taylor, all Fremont; Kerry McClain Taylor and Barbara Lester, Salt Lake City (currently in Kenya, Africa); DeLores Anne and Gerald Brock Jumper, Jr. Tracey, CA; Riley D. and Joni Mecham Taylor, Bicknell; and foster son, Julius Chavez, West Valley City, Utah. Step-sons: Joe and Connie Kenney, Garth and Jann Kenney, David and Kathryn Kenney, and Dana and Lesa Kenney, all Utah County. Dunk is also survived by sisters: Ora Mascaro, Fremont; Wilma Ann Boone, Stansbury Park; Sherma Sondrup, Orem; and Carole Dean and Glen Chabot, Eureka, CA. Dad is Gramp to 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grand children. Also, 16 step grandchildren and 23 step great-grandchildren. Brother in-law Emery Snow. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Vera, daughter Camille Taylor, and a great-grandson Christian James Moosman. Also siblings; Verna Vell and Mac McDonald, Joseph Chapman Taylor, Van and Lela Taylor, Clay and Floyd Blackburn, Lela and Layton Oyler, Frank Mascaro, Cheryl and Kirby Neal Hill, Jack Boone, Baur Dee and Glen Sheffield, and Keith Sondrup. The Family would like to especially thank Gunnison Health Care for their service to dad including Sherree Rechtsteiner, Teri Leavitt, and Connie Durfey. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. in the Fremont LDS Ward Chapel. Friends may call for viewing at the Springer Turner Funeral Home in Richfield, Friday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. or at the Ward Chapel in Fremont Saturday morning from 11:00 to 12:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Harold Brown American Legion Post #92 and the Utah Honor Guard will be in the Fremont Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
