Edward W. Johnson

December 1, 1924 — June 3, 2024

Richfield, Utah - Edward Wasden Johnson, age 99, of Richfield, passed away June 3, 2024, in Monroe, Utah. He was born to Alvin Smith and Sofe Christina Wasden Johnson on a cold December 1, 1924, in Lovell, Wyoming. Edward was welcomed by his siblings Edna, George, and Alva. In the years to come, they would welcome Calvin, Annella, Jerrold, Alvin Jr. (Bun), Lois, and Louis. The family worked hard to provide for themselves in a variety of vocations, but largely in a sawmill. Each summer they would set up a mill in the nearby Big Horn Mountains to harvest the trees and haul the final cut wood to Lovell. It was here that Ed learned to work hard. He also loved to fish in the small creeks of the Big Horns and called it his “Laugh’n Place.”

Ed met Moana Monk in 1941 on a youth temple trip to the Salt Lake Temple. Moana grew up in nearby Cowley. They married and were sealed in the Logan Utah Temple January 21,1944.

Ed was drafted into the Army in September 1944. He served until July 1946 in the Army Corp Engineers. After his service ended, Ed and Moana welcomed Steve, Anne, Dale and Lynn (twins), and Julie.

Ed attended BYU and in 1952 received his Bachelors of Business Administration focused on Accounting. After graduation, Ed, Moana, Steve, and Anne, returned to Lovell. They worked the sawmill until 1955. After that, Ed found employment with Glenn E. Nielsen and moved from Lovell to Cody, Wyoming. This started his career of doing accounting, and other management tasks, for Glenn Nielson’s land, oil, and ranching businesses. He worked for Glen Nielsen for the remainder of his career.

Ed is active as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in many positions throughout his life including Elders Quorum President, Bishop, and counselor in a Stake Presidency, Senior missionary, ordinance worker, counselor in a Temple Presidency, Director of a Family History Center and advisor to the Area Seventy in Family History. He felt his service to those he called was a rich treasure.

Sadly, after 24 years of marriage, Moana passed away on January 22, 1968, after almost two years of battling cancer. Despite this hardship, Ed found solace in his family and in the promises of an eternal marriage. Extended family rallied to comfort and help. Among those was Moana’s sister Ruth. Over time they decided to marry. Ed and Ruth were married on May 6, 1969 in the Salt Lake Temple. They welcomed Paul and Jenet in the coming years.

Ed and Ruth enjoyed the next 51 years of marriage supporting and nurturing family and their community.

Ruth passed away suddenly on August 1, 2020.

Ed now joins his parents and siblings, Moana, Ruth, his son Dale, daughter in-law Marcie and two great grandchildren.

He is survived by more than 100 descendants. Steve (Marilyn), Anne, Lynn (Sheila), Julie (James), Paul (Jennifer), and Jenet (Michael) and their children and spouses, grand-children, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Each is precious to him.
