Ethel Brown

August 5, 1922 — March 9, 2006

Loa, Utah - Our kind and beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, Ethel May Hopkins Brown, age 83, died March 9, 2006 in Loa, after a valiant battle with cancer. She was born August 5, 1922 in Brookfield, Ohio, a daughter of William David and Cholie May Davidson Hopkins. She graduated from Sharon Commercial High School in Sharon, PA, Class of 1941. She served in the United States Army during World War II as a Sargent 409 Medical Technician. She received the American Service Medal; World War II Victory Medal and two Good Conduct Medals. Ethel married Freeman Antone “Tony” Brown, July 11, 1946 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Jordan River LDS Temple July 8, 1983. He died September 9, 1999. Ethel was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in all the auxiliaries. She and her husband served a mission to Palmyra, New York. She was a member of the DUP Camp Mauna Loa and was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years. Ethel enjoyed handiwork, quilting, cooking and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ethel and Tony owned and operated the Knotty Pine Café in Loa for a number of years. Ethel is survived by her four sons: Roy and Bonnie Brown, Paul and Duella Brown, Darwin and Gay Brown, all of Loa; Sam Brown of Hanksville; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; sisters: Shirley Messina and Billie Joyce Rodgers, both of Pennsylvania; an uncle, Kenneth B. Davidson of Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by 1 grandson, and a sister, Marian Parker. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 13, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. in the Loa LDS Stake Center, where friends may call for viewing Sunday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. and again Monday morning from 11:00 to 12:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Harold Brown American Legion Post #92 will be in the Loa Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah.
