Richfield, Utah – Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Evelyn Elaine Moore Merchant, age 82, passed away November 14, 2022 in Centerfield, Utah. She was born November 30, 1939 in Marysvale, Utah, a daughter of Fred Jay and Betty June Howes Moore.
She married Gene Merchant in 1956. Seven wonderful children came from this union. Evelyn and Gene were later divorced.
If you knew Elaine, she would give you the shirt off her back. Even though she didn’t have much, if she thought someone needed it more than her, she would give it to them. She was kind and compassionate, very giving and you could count on her if she gave you her word. She loved her Heavenly Father and felt like she had a personal relationship with him. Although she would often say that she didn’t have to be in church every Sunday to know God.
She raised 7 children of her own and a few of her kid’s friends that were invited into her home.
Elaine enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren when they came to visit. She enjoyed riding horses when she was younger and motorcycles later in life. She liked driving around Heplers ponds and seeing the ducks and gray herrings every year in the summer and fall. She always had hummingbirds outside her windows because she kept a feeder for them. She enjoyed cooking and baking cookies for her neighbors at Urcybelle apartments. She liked to read as much she could and enjoyed the simple things in life.
Elaine will be missed by her children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors.
She is survived by her children: Holly Merchant, Elsinore; Rodney (Keri) Merchant, Redmond; Walter Merchant, Richfield; David (Roxann) Merchant, Boulder City NV; Janie Alexander, Salt Lake City; and Cyrus Merchant, Centerfield; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; sister Maxine (Oran) Peck, St.George.
She is preceded in death by her son, James Carl Merchant; her grandson, Paul Anderson; her parents, Fred and Betty Moore; and siblings, Jay Moore, Jerry Moore and Joyce Fletcher.
