Fay Lay

August 22, 1912 — April 1, 2008

Circleville, Utah - Our kind and beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and sister, Ethel Fay Rigby Lay, age 95, of Glenwood and forrmerly of Circleville and Orem, died April 1, 2008 in Glenwood. She was born August 22, 1912 in Fairview, Utah, a daughter of Howard Wix and Sarah Celestia Peterson Rigby. She attended school in Fairview and Mt. Pleasant. At Snow College she was the society editor for the yearbook. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a BA in Elementary Education and continued her education throughout her teaching career. She was active in the LDS Church and served a mission in the Eastern States. She married Ervin Clive Lay, July 28, 1937 in Junction, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. He died October 24, 1992. Fay taught elementary school in Fairview, Salt Lake City and Circleville, Utah and in Grand Junction and Rifle, Colorado. She was dedicated to her students and was influential in many young lives. Everyone she taught loved her. In later years it was common for students to visit her and ask about her. Fay was dedicated to her family. She was always proud of their accomplishments and very generous to them, helping them however she could. Fay was proud of the musical talents of her family and would request that they play and sing for her whenever they came to see her. She enjoyed her retirement, loved growing flowers, especially roses and gave away many bouquets from her garden in Orem. She hosted many Provo Senior Citizens trips throughout the United States. Fay enjoyed bowling and was an expert bridge player, playing duplicate bridge with several different groups. She always enjoyed singing, had a lovely alto voice and was in the Florence Jefferson Madison Choir in Provo. She is survived by her children: Merna and Ralph Ray of Olathe, Colorado; Robert and Lorna Lay of Circleville; Clyde and Marcia Lay of Richfield and currently serving in the Sapporo Japan LDS Mission; Henry and Barbara Lay of Vancouver, Washington; 15 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Dr. J. Keith Rigby of Provo and Therald Rigby of Salt Lake City. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David Lay, a great-grandson, Nathaniel Lay; four sisters: Ila Jensen, Glenda Staker, Opal Monette Abbott, Ruth Christensen Matthews and two brothers: Cleston Rigby and Clyde Rigby. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 4, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. in the Circleville 2nd LDS Ward Chapel, where friends may call for viewing Friday morning from 11:00 to12:30 prior to the services. Burial will be in the Circleville Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah.
