Fred Hellstrom

April 4, 1919 — January 17, 2005

Bicknell, Utah - Carl Fredrick “Fred” Hellstrom, age 85, of Bicknell, died January 17, 2005 in Gunnison, Utah. He was born April 4, 1919 in Randolph, Utah, a son of Leonard Leroy and Luella Vilate Longhurst Hellstrom. He graduated from South Rich High School, Class of 1937, where he excelled in Basketball. He got his Bachelor’s Degree from Utah State and his Master’s Degree from Colorado A&M. Fred married Dal Marr Hurst, April 24, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. In the fall of 1942 he went into the army and served during World War II from October of 1942 to December of 1945. He served in Hawaii and IwaJima. Fred taught school in Cokeville, Wyoming for two years and them moved to Bicknell, Utah where he taught Vocational Agriculture at Wayne High School for 32 years, retiring in 1984. Fred and Dal Marr worked at the Manti Temple as Ordinance Workers. They served a mission for the LDS Church in the Missouri St. Louis Mission in 1987. Fred was always active in the church. He served as a counselor in the Thurber Ward Bishopric and a counselor in the Wayne Stake Presidency. He served on the Bicknell Town Board and was a member of the State Vocational Agriculture Association. He enjoyed gardening, and having worked on his uncle’s farm as a boy, he always enjoyed the farms, cattle, sheep and fields of Wayne County. Fred is survived by his wife of Bicknell; children: Cordell and Donna Hellstrom of Henderson, Nevada; Sonja and Kyle Burdash of Layton, Utah; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brothers: Delmar and Leora Hellstrom of Ogden, Evan and Jennie Hellstrom of Clearfield. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Reed Hellstrom, Myron Hellstrom and Hubert Hellstrom. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 21, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. in the Thurber LDS Ward Chapel, in Bicknell, where friends may call for viewing Friday morning from 11:00 to 12:30 prior to the services. Graveside services and burial will be Monday, January 24, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. in the Randolph City Cemetery in Randolph, Utah under the direction of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah.
