Garn K. Bastian

December 29, 1923 — March 6, 2006

Sigurd, Utah - Garn K. Bastian, age 82, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away March 6, 2006 at his home in Sigurd, after a long illness. He was born in Vermillion, Sevier County, Utah, a son of Glen and Laura Louise Kane Bastian, on December 29, 1923. His mother passed away when he was 6 years old. His father then married Berniece Cushing when he was 9 years old. She was a kind and loving mother to Garn. He was raised in Sigurd, Utah and graduated from Richfield High School, Class of 1942. He was able to attend BAC (SUU) in Cedar City, Utah, in the fall before going in the US Army to fight in WWII. He was in the 276th Infantry Regiment, 70th Division. While fighting in Germany, Garn was wounded and he received a purple heart. Upon his return, Garn married the love of his life, Shirley Glee Cowley, of Venice, Utah, on September 26, 1946. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. They would have celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in September. Garn loved his Heavenly Father and served as a loving Bishop for the Sigurd Ward. He also served as High Councilman and was a loving and dedicated home teacher. He served as an ASCS Committee member, on the Sigurd Town Council and also on the Piute and Cedar Ridge water boards. He enjoyed his life as a farmer and raising his Suffolk sheep and horses. His happiest moments were when he was with his wife and family. Garn is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Sigurd; his children: Kathy and Robert Baum of Orem; Ileen and Brad Keele of West Jordan; Ann and David Marshall of Beaver; Terry G. and Sandra Bastian of Mona; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Max and Yvonne Bastian of Colorado Springs, CO; Ileen McBride, Brent and Mary Ann Bastian, all of Richfield; Charlene Hunt of Sigurd; sisters-in-law: Delles and Glen Ogden, and Rulla Cowley, all of Richfield. He was preceded in death by his father, Glen Bastian, his mother, Louise Bastian, his step-mother, Berniece Bastian and a great-granddaughter, Deanna Marshall. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 12 Noon in the Sigurd LDS Ward Chapel. Friends may call for viewing at the Springer Turner Funeral Home in Richfield, Friday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. and at the ward chapel in Sigurd, Saturday morning from 10:00 to 11:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #5050 will be in the Vermillion Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah.
