Hank Achenbach

February 27, 1933 — July 28, 2014

Glenwood, Utah - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, Hendrik Andries (Hank) Achenbach, age 81, died July 28, 2014 at his home in Glenwood, after a valiant battle with stomach cancer. He was born February 27, 1933 in Leuwarden, Holland, a son of Theodorus and Janna VanDerTuin Achenbach. He graduated from High School in Holland in 1950. Hank immigrated to the United States from Holland in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. Hank married Barbara Lakeit, November 8, 1957 in Salt Lake City. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple June 29, 1971. Hank was an active member of the LDS Church, serving as Sunday School President, High Priest Group Leader; Financial Clerk; Home Teacher; and served a mission in the Bishop's Storehouse. He was a Career Advisor at Highland High School and a member of the Sugarhouse Chamber of Commerce. Hank had a career in retail, and was employed with W.T. Grant Co. as manager for 15 years; supervisor at Anita Dress Shops for 13 years and manager at a 7-Eleven Store for 10 years. The Achenbachs resided in Salt Lake City for 30 years, then moved to Bicknell, Utah from 1995 to 2005, after which they moved to Glenwood, where they have since resided. Hank enjoyed fishing, traveling and spending time with his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara, of Glenwood; his children: Margaret and Gus Ambler of Kearns; Doris Sutton of Mesa, Arizona; Hendrik A. (Hank) Achenbach, Jr. of Glenwood; 4 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Annie Marvidikis of Sandy. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, Brett Caputo. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. in the Glenwood LDS Ward Chapel, where friends may call for viewing Saturday morning one hour prior to the services. Entombment, with military honors accorded by the Utah Honor Guard, will be in the Wasatch Lawn Garden of the Roses Mausoleum, 3401 Highland Drive, in Salt Lake City, Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 3:00 P.M. under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
