Salina, Utah - Harold Robison George, age 87, died January 9, 2007 at his home in Salina of cancer. He was born October 21, 1919 in Escalante, Utah, a son of Leslie and Laverna Robison George. He graduated from Escalante High School, Class of 1937. He attended Brigham Young University where he received his Masters Degree and he got his Doctorate at USC in California. In the 1930's, Harold carried mail by mule from Escalante to Boulder, Utah. He was the last mail carrier to do this. Harold was a gunner on an antitank with Patton’s 3rd Army in the European Theater during World War II. He served an LDS Mission to the Eastern States from 1941 to 1943. Harold married Elma Shurtz June 18, 1943 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He was very active in the LDS Church, serving as a counselor in the Salina Bishopric, High Priest Group Leader in the Las Vegas 3rd Ward, and he worked as an ordinance worker in the Las Vegas Temple. Harold was a past member of the Salina Lions Club. He enjoyed gardening and hiking, and he loved the mountains. He worked for 25 years in the Nevada School system, serving as Principal of Virgin Valley High School in Bunkerville and teaching at the Old 5th Street School in Las Vegas. He opened Rose Warren Elementary School and retired from O.K. Adcock Elementary School in Las Vegas, Nevada. After his retirement in 1979, Harold and Elma moved to Salina, Utah. Harold is survived by his loving wife Elma of Salina; children: Robert and Kathleen George of Mesa, AZ; Garth and Carol George of Adelanto, CA; Roger and Linda George of Olympia, WA; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Douglas George; two brothers and five sisters: DeVere George; Homer George; Arvilla Andersen, Laura Baker, Olive Norton, Dora Maude Vowell and Thelma Walton. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 12 Noon in the Salina LDS Stake Center, 98 West 400 North, where friends may call for viewing Saturday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Salina American Legion Post #36 will be in the Salina Eastside Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah.
