Herman was born on 29 March 1937 in Turlock, California, a son of Virgil S. And Clara Katherine Souza Gier. He married Rose Maria Hultman on 15 June 1957 in Carson City, Nevada. Their marriage was solemnized in the Oakland LDS Temple 18 June 1975. He was preceded in death by a son, Brian Lee Gier; his parents and his step-father, John Catrina. Herman was a quiet man of great integrity, a caring, loving and giving man. He was a man of great strength and courage. He was always quietly trying to do thing to help others. Herman was dearly loved by his wife, family and friends and will be greatly missed. He had a gentle, quiet way about him. He didn’t talk much, but said so much in what he didn’t say. He was a truly honest and remarkable man. He and his sweetheart, Rose, celebrated 50 years of marriage on 15 June 2007. A celebration that was attended by many, many dear friends and family, was held in Salt Lake City, UT and was given by their friends of 30+ years, Murray and Georgina Ford of Las Vegas, NV. Herman was an extremely hard worker all his life - he retired in June of 1999. He enjoyed working with his hands and being outdoors. He loved the wildlife and enjoyed interacting with them when he and Rose lived in the mountains in the cabin of their dreams. He loved his family and friends, but especially his sweetheart, Rose. Herman served in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in many positions over the years. He was a Sunbeam Teacher, Valiant B., Blazers, Nursery Leader, Elder’s Quorum Teacher, Secretary in Sunday School and High Priest Quorum and as a Ward Missionary. He was also active with the Wasatch County Senior Citizens until his ill health prevented him from many activities. Herman was so grateful for the help that he received from his many friends, neighbors and ward members throughout the past few years of his illness. He expressed his love and gratitude for them many, many times. We say to you, dearest husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, “Thank you for the privilege we had of being a part of your life. We will miss you beyond words. We look forward to the time when we will meet again. As one of your favorite sayings when talking about something you really wanted to do - ‘It could happen’. So it’s not good-bye, but ‘See Ya Later!’” A celebration of Herman’s life and his 71st Birthday will be held Saturday, March 29, 2008 in the Centerfield 2nd LDS Ward Chapel in Axtell, Utah, where friends may call for viewing Friday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. or Saturday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 prior to the services. Burial will be in the Centerfield Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah.
