Jack V. King

May 14, 1931 — February 4, 2007

Bicknell, Utah - Our kind and beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, Jack Volney King, age 75, passed away in the early hours of February 4, 2007 in Richfield, Utah, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 14, 1931 in Bicknell, Utah, a son of Hugh Volney and Fern Pace King. He graduated from Wayne High School, Class of 1949. He attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, Utah and graduated in 1958 after two years in the U.S. Army with duty in Korea as a Corporal in the Signal Corp. After returning from Korea, he returned to college, attending winter quarters after herding sheep on the family ranch during the spring and fall. He finally received his Bachelor of Science in 1958. Jack met his wife, Bonnie Shelton, at Logan and they were married on March 1, 1957. They returned to Wayne County to assist with the ranch. In 1968, Jack assumed management of the family ranch. Jack was noted for his stories around the campfire and elsewhere, often claiming to be “Thurber Ward’s oldest deacon” and the next “Bishop of Pine Creek.” He often greeted new acquaintances with the fact that he was “Mayor of the Bicknell Bottons.” He traded his horse in recent years for his 4-wheeler while “supervising” the ranch operation after turning it over to his son. He enjoyed his afternoon sessions playing “Sluff” with friends in Teasdale. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 50 years; a daughter, Camille (Dennis) Blackburn of Bicknell; and his sons: Kenneth (Virginia) King of Riverton, Wyoming; Verland (Terri) King of Torrey; Vance (Jodi) King of Vernal; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley (Rusty) Hanscom of Lyman. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Sharp; his parents and two brothers, Dale P. King and James E. King. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 9, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. in the Thurber LDS Ward Chapel in Bicknell. Friends may call for viewing at the Springer Turner Funeral Home in Richfield, Thursday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. or at the ward chapel in Bicknell Friday morning from 11:00 to 12:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Harold Brown American Legion Post #92 will be in the Bicknell Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah.
