Jay L. Allred

February 5, 1924 — November 24, 2014

On November 24, 2014, in Cedar City, Utah, Jay Loren Allred, age 90, journeyed home to his wife, Wilma Lue. Both from Wayne County, they forged a strong friendship and love for each in their early years, and throughout the sixty-five years of their marriage. Wilma learned to value Jay's witty sense of humor, hard work and empathetic nature. Jay was born February 5, 1924 in Fremont, Utah, a son of Loren Oral and Lillian Odessa Balle Allred. He married Wilma Lou Oldroyd, July 10, 1943, in Elko, Nevada. Their marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple, November 17, 1951. She died November 19, 2007. He later married Beverly NIchols Spendlove, September 2, 2008, in Cedar City, Utah. Jay's sense of humor often surprised many when they asked him questions. when ordering a Pepsi, he often quipped, "If you don't have Pepsi, put the Coke in a Pepsi glass,". Constantly, the simple greeting of "How are you?? turned into his own question -- "How much time do you have?? If someone responded with "Plenty," he would tease with, "Well, I don't." Jay's trademark, however, was his work ethic. He served in many church callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: a counselor in a bishopric during his middle and later years in Kanarraville, Utah; twice a High Councilor in Batesville, Arkansas; a full time mission with Wilma Lou in Little Rock, Arkansas and Colorado Springs, Colorado; and a stake mission in Cedar City, Utah. Also, as a branch President in Arkansas, Jay supervised his branch's building of its first new chapel. Jay served his country and worked to protect its citizens during twelve military invasions in the Pacific during World War II, finishing his military service in Nagasaki and Hiroshima only days after the atomic bomb was dropped. Jay's diligent work ethic was shown in business, as well. He was one of the three original owners of Western Rock Products, an owner of Cedar Aggregate Products, and co-owner of Allred Enterprises. He often said, "Give more to an employer than he gives to you, and you will always have a job." Not only did Jay have a great sense of humor and a strong work ethic, he also had an empathetic nature. He would travel miles to help a friend, or he would quietly walk next door to say, "Hello." He knew the name and circumstance of most everyone he ever met. Because of his love for others, many will miss him, especially his second wife, Beverly; his children: Galen and Barbara Allred; Leanna and Bud Cammack; MaryJane and George Knight; Tonya and Bill Payne; and his 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren......but they know Jay's journey will be a happy one. He was preceded in death by a son, Jaysson Allred and a daughter, Jaylene Allred. The family would like to extend a special Thanks to The Intermountain Health Care Hospice, especially Jill, Becky, Bonnie and Craig. Grave side services were held Wednesday, November 26, 2014 in the Lyman Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Harold Brown American Legion Post #92 and the United States Marine Honor Guard, under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
