Jean Chappell Okerlund

Monroe, Utah - Margaret Jean Chappell Okerlund was born in Bicknell, Utah, March 24, 1931, and died peacefully with her 2 loving sons by her side October 7, 2022 in Monroe, Utah. She was the first of 5 children born to David Grant and Caroline Margaret Peterson Chappell who preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her brothers Calvin Chappell of Provo, Utah and Eddie Chappell of Twin Falls, Idaho. She is survived by her sister Phyllis (CH) Robinson of Salt Lake City, her brother Larry Chappell of Lyman, and sisters-in-law: Ruth Chappell of Mapleton and Connie Chappell of Twin Falls, Idaho.

Jean’s parents moved to Salt Lake County for employment, where Jean graduated from Granite High School in 1949. Her family moved back to Wayne County after her graduation from high school. There she met and married Gerald Rulon Okerlund in the Lyman church on September 2, 1950. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple on September 2, 1972. They had four sons, Les (Pam), Ralph (Cindy), Chris, Russell (Christi). Les and Chris preceded her in death and Ralph and Russ live close by in Monroe. Gerald died May 22, 1997, she later married Tomas Ramon Vigil March 23, 2001. He died May 2, 2010 in Monroe. She has been blessed with a great posterity including 12 grandchildren, 31 great-grand-children, and 7 great-great grandchildren, plus one great-grandchild on the way.

Jean loved to serve and was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served in many callings including primary president, young women’s president, and relief society president in many different wards. Jean and Gerald served a mission in Kayenta Arizona and loved the people they served unconditionally.

Jean served as Monroe City Recorder for many years and later served on the Monroe City Council for three terms. Jean worked for the U.S. Forest Service and later in car sales in Monroe and Richfield. She was a co-owner of the family dairy with Gerald and also served as secretary of Monroe South Bend Canal Company for many years. She was active in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and for many years was a member of and very active in the Monroe City Fire Auxiliary. Jean was famous for being kind, generous and classy. She loved everyone she knew and everyone who knew her loved her. She loved camping and travel with family and friends and said she would rather be on the mountain than on a swanky beach.

The family wishes to thank her long-time home teachers and visiting teachers for their love and service. We also wish to thank the care givers from the Hospice service and at Monroe Canyon Assisted Living Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at 12 Noon in the Monroe LDS Stake Center, 140 South Main Street in Monroe, where friends may call for viewing Wednesday morning from 10:00 to 11:30 prior to the services.

Burial will be in the Monroe City Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah
