Jerry Pickett

December 20, 1928 — June 10, 2006

Centerfield, Utah - Merrill Jerry Pickett, age 77, of Centerfield, died June 10, 2006 in Gunnison, Utah, of cancer. He was born December 20, 1928 in Gunnison, a son of Merrill and Erma Olsen Pickett. He graduated from Gunnison High School, Class of 1947. He attended Utah Stake University and graduated in 1959 with a B.S. in Agronomy. He served in the Korean War with the US Army. He married Vonda Jean Richards, August 6, 1965 in the Logan LDS Temple in Logan, Utah. Jerry was an active member of the LDS Church, serving as Sunday School President, Cub Scout Leader, Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader and served in the Manti Temple as an Ordinance Worker for 7 years. Jerry worked for the goverment as a soil conservationist for 25 years. He led efforts to clean-up after the Teton Dam disaster in Idaho in June of 1976. He was a member of the Gunnison American Legion Post #104. Jerry enjoyed woodworking, farming, renovating houses, working on projects with his family. He loved playing sports and watching his children play sports, traveling, reading, landscaping and playing with his grandkids. He is survived by his wife, Vonda, of Centerfield; children: Greg Merrill and Laurie Pickett of Ogden; Sandra Pickett of Centerfield; Mike Jerry Pickett, Mark Jay and Becky Pickett, all of Provo; his mother, Erma Pickett of Gunnison; brothers and sisters: Louis and Willy Pickett of South Jordan; Nada Ann and Sterling Stillman of Riverton; Phyllis and Lee Jensen of Redmond; Kirby and Georgeanna Pickett of Gunnison. He was preceded in death by his father, Merrill Pickett; a sister and her husband, Norma and Doug Jensen of Redmond. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. in the Centerfield 1st LDS Ward Chapel, where friends may call for viewing Monday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. or Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Gunnison American Legion Post #104 will be in the Gunnison City Cemetery under the direction of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah.
