Monroe, Utah - Our beloved son, brother, grandson and friend, Jesse James Chavis, age 28, passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2015 in Dinton, Louisiana. He was born October 27, 1986 in Richfield, Utah, a son of Dan Kirk and Debra Lynn Hunt Chavis. Jesse was a true cowboy, horseman, bull rider, jockey and like he always said, "a bronc stomper". He loved his family and friends with all of his heart. He was a gentle spirit that left us way too soon. He missed his brother, Ben, who passed away June 30, 2013 and wanted so much to be with him again. Jesse had a deep respect for his friends and all women. When a woman walked into the room, Jesse would immediately stand up and remove his hat. Jesse will be inducted into the Jockey Hall of Fame as the youngest Jockey under 30 to win so many races with the highest stakes. He will be deeply missed by his many rodeo and jockey friends. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the friends in our area, in St. George and in Louisiana, who made it possible to bring Jesse back home to rest. Your love and kindness will never be forgotten. Thank you so much. Jesse is survived by his mother, Debra Upchurch of Richfield; his father, Dan K. and Toni Chavis of Monroe; sister: Jenny Chavis of Richfield; step-brother: Dallas Banks of Monroe; grandparents: Duane and LuJean Hunt of Teasdale; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his brother, Ben Eldon Chavis; grandparents: Bud Eldon and Beverly Ann Ence Chavis; and Judy Stewart Taylor. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 12 Noon in the Monroe 1st LDS Ward Chapel, 49 East 200 North in Monroe. Friends may call for viewing at the Springer Turner Funeral Home in Richfield, Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. or at the Ward Chapel in Monroe, Thursday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 prior to the services.
