John H. Smit

Gunnison, Utah - John Huibertus Smit, age 86, of Gunnison passed away two hours short of his 87th birthday on April 17, 2017 in Gunnison. He was born April 18, 1930 in Rotterdam, Holland, a son of Gerrit and Angenita Krouwel Smit of Rotterdam, Holland, (The Netherlands). He married Ann VanStenis June 4, 1952 in Rotterdam. She preceded him in death on October 6, 2012. John drove truck for Hatchco Oil, and JB Kelly for thirty plus years. He earned many safety awards including a million miles accident free award. John also owned and operated Smit's TV service for 37 years. John is survived by his son-in-Law Jim Nowling of Richfield; Granddaughter Terry (Fred) Stark of Ashland, Kentucky; Grandsons: Steve Nowling of Richfield; John (Angela) Nowling of Central Valley; 4 great-grandchildren. John is preceded in death by his wife Ann, and daughter Marja Nowling, by both of his parents, two brothers, and on sister. As per John's request he was cremated and no service will be held.
