Katie Adkins

Kate Klingenberg Adkins, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2023 in Monroe, Utah. Kate was born to Frank Hugh and Irene Shields Klingenberg in Jacksonville, Florida on December 6, 1941. She had two brothers, Donald Heflin Vickory and Byron Lee Vickory, and one sister, Sue Klingenberg. The family lived primarily in Arlington, adjacent to Jacksonville. Katie as she was commonly known, and her siblings were very energetic children.

A devout Christian, she became interested in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when she was 17. She was baptized October 31, 1959.

She graduated from Terry Parker High School with high grades. She was immediately employed by Prudential Insurance Company South Central Home Office working with an early computer. She was in a 21-story office building, the highest in Jacksonville, and was so skilled in public relations that she was assigned as a visitor tours guide of the building.

In 1961, friends in her ward introduced her to a Marine by the name of Marlowe who was visiting Jacksonville. Carefully chaperoned, they had an enjoyable week getting to know each other. Later that same year, still under the watchful eye of their mutual friends, they visited the Hill Cumorah pageant, saw Niagra Falls, Joseph Smith’s birthplace and the Broadway shoe “Bye Bye Birdie.” A flurry of letters were exchanged between Quantico, Virginia, and Jacksonville, culminating in a proposal of marriage on December 6, 1961.

Katie and Marlowe physically held hands for the first time since his proposal and her acceptance eight days before they were married on August 27, 1962. They then proceeded directly to Utah where they were sealed in the Manti Temple on September 8, 1962. They lived in Quantico, Virginia; Salt Lake City, Utah; Santa Ana, California; Logan, Utah; and Richmond, Utah. Their daughter and only living child, Leah, was born while Katie was living in Salt Lake with her in-laws.

After moving to Richmond, Katie worked as a teacher’s aide for five years at Park Elementary. She graduated magna cum laude in three years with a dual certificate in elementary/early childhood education. She earned her Masters Degree in early childhood education, both degrees from Utah State University.

She was very active in multiple activities as a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at both the Ward and Stake level. She took great pleasure in providing aid to those in need. She served as an officiator in the Logan Temple for 11 years, a very humbling and wonderful experience.

She loved plants and enjoyed watching the flora and fauna about her, eagerly sharing the sighting of rainbows with her friends.

She is survived by her husband, Marlowe; by her daughter, Leah; by five grandchildren, Katrina (Graydon) Bascom, Callista (Thomas) Madsen, Angell (Derek) Hooley, Malachi Adkins, and Thomas Stewart, and by 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov 18, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the Richmond Utah LDS Stake Center, 135 West Main in Richmond, Utah, where friends may call for viewing  Friday, November 17 from 6-8 p.m. or Saturday from 9-10:30 prior to the services.

Burial will be in the Richmond City Cemetery.
