Lyman, Utah - Kennard Dean Chappell, age 87, died April 25, 2010 in Loa, Utah of causes incident to age. He was born May 7, 1922 in Lyman, Utah, a son of William LaMont and LeNora Belle Cook Chappell. Kennard graduated from Wayne High School, Class of 1941. He attended Snow College in Ephraim for 5 quarters. Kennard was drafted into the US Army in May of 1943 and served three years during World War II in the European Theater. His unit was sent to Germany as replacements during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Kennard served a mission for the LDS Church in the Texas Louisiana Mission from January 17, 1947 to March 24, 1949. He married Hulda Leola Turner, May 29, 1950 in the Manti LDS Temple. She died July 28, 1971. He married Linda Durfee, May 8, 1973, in the Manti LDS Temple. He was an active member of the LDS Church, serving as Bishop, Bishop’s Counselor, High Councilor, Priesthood Leader, Home Teacher, Stake Seventy and as a full time missionary. He also served on the Wayne County School Board for 18 years. Farm work and animal husbandry were Kennards hobbies and recreation. Early in life he was catcher on the Lyman Baseball Team. He played high school basketball and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and picnicking with his family. Kennard often stated that his greatest accomplishment and joy was his large family. He is survived by his wife, Linda, of Lyman; his children: Dean and Peggy Chappell, Lane and Coral Chappell, Ardell and Kenneth Noyes, Merrill and Colleen Chappell all of Lyman; Kevin and Nancy Chappell of Richfield; Carma and Wayne Gifford of Central Valley; Newell and Melinda Chappell of Phoenix, Arizona; Boyd Kennard and Alice Chappell of Topeka, Kansas; Deeanna and Thomas D. Price and Karen Chappell, all of Eagle Mountain and Emily Grace Chappell of Cedar City; brother, Wendell and Burla Chappell of Lyman; 41 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leola; eight brothers and four sisters: Nora LeRollen Chappell, Geneva Belle Chappell, Woodrow Chappell, Olive Beth Chappell, Merrill Joshua Chappell, George Newell Chappell, William LaVon Chappell, Wanda LaVell Henrie, David Grant Chappell, Lloyd Bybee Chappell, Austin Whitney Chappell and Farrell LaMont Chappell. The family would like to express deep appreciation to the Gunnison Valley Home Health/Hospice nurses and staff, Dr. Jeff Chappell and Serenity Springs Assisted Living, for their compassionate care given to Kennard and Linda. Funeral Services will be held Friday, April 30, 2010 at 1:00 P.M in the Lyman LDS Ward Chapel, where friends may call for viewing Thursday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. or Friday morning from 11:00 to 12:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Harold Brown American Legion Post #92 and the Utah Honor Guard will be in the Lyman Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
