Lamont Chappell

Lyman, Utah - Our kind and loving husband, dad, paha, brother, uncle, friend and neighbor, Farrell LaMont Chappell, age 54, died December 14, 2009 in Salt Lake City of complications from a stroke. He was born September 19, 1955 in Salina, Utah, the seventh child and only son of Farrell LaMont and Bernice Maxfield Chappell. He graduated from Wayne High School, Class of 1973. He graduated from Sevier Valley Tech in Richfield in Diesel Mechanics in 1975. LaMont married Marleen Brown, June 11, 1976 in Richfield, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple June 15, 1979. He was an active member of the LDS Church, where he served as Elder’s Quorum Secretary, Lyman Ward Clerk, as a Primary Teacher and Sunday School President. LaMont and Marleen have been serving the past two years at the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison, where they held family home evening with the inmates there. This was a calling LaMont enjoyed very much. Since it’s organization, LaMont has been a member of the Lyman Volunteer Fire Deparment. He was the Past President of the Lyman Water Association. LaMont began his career with the National Park Service in 1977, working as a seasonal trail worker. At the time of his death, he was the Maintenance Supervisor at Capitol Reef National Park, where his tenure has been longer than any other employee at Capitol Reef. LaMont had a natural ability to fix anything and operate any piece of equipment. He was an expert welder. LaMont’s greatest joy was his family. He loved being wherever they were, even if he had to go to the city. His grandchildren adored him and he loved taking them to see the sheep and llamas. You could catch him any time reading a book to one of them. He loved to fish. Lake Powell, Thousand Lake, Boulder or ice fishing on Fish Lake. He especially loved a day of fishing when he out-fished Marleen. He knew every inch of Thousand Lake Mountain and enjoyed spending time there with his family. LaMont took great pride in his 80 acres of heaven in his backyard. He loved being a farmer and taught his family the value of hard work. LaMont is survived by his wife of Lyman; children: Cody and Christine Chappell of St. George; Steven and Courtney Chappell, Clint and Krista Chappell, all of Cedar City; Marcie and Jeremy Nostrom of Santaquin; Melinda and Ray Sharma of Holiday; 7 grandchildren; sisters: Narda Rose and RG Torgerson of Koosharem; Shirley and Walt Hanks of Grover; Myra and Kent Sharp of Riverton; Polly and Ken Armstrong of Santa Clara; Debra (deceased) and Stanley Peterson of Orem; Danna Kay Orton of Beaver. He was preceded in death by his parents, Farrell and Bernice Chappell; his in-laws: Marion (Powder) and Kathleen Brown; his sister, Debra Peterson and a niece, Brianna Orton. LaMont’s family wishes to express our deepest thanks to the Doctors and Nurses at Intermountain Medical Center’s Neuroscience Critical Care Unit. You are truly angels. The love and concern shown not only to LaMont, but to our entire family was above and beyond. You have touched our lives forever. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in the Loa LDS Stake Center. Friends may call for viewing at the Lyman LDS Ward Chapel, Friday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. or at the Stake Center in Loa, Saturday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 prior to the services. Burial will be in the Lyman Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
