Lucy R. Powell

Loa, Utah/Lovell, Wyoming - Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Lucy Robertson Powell, age 90, died Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at the home of her daughter in Loa, Utah. She was born April 21, 1921 in Lovell, Wyoming, a daughter of Cyrus Snell and Florence Harriet Burnham Robertson. She was one of five children: Roma, Marlo, Jean and LaVerne. Lucy graduated from Lovell High School in May of 1939. She said her school years were fun years. She had the honor of being Junior Prom Queen. She received a teaching certificate from the University of Wyoming in 1942. She was teaching the fourth grade in the Lovell school system when her husband-to-be, Bill Powell, returned from World War II. Bill and Lucy were married, March 22, 1945 in Billings, Montana. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple, June 23, 1970. They were married for 66 years. Bill died May 26, 2011. After Bill was discharged from the military, they made their home in Lovell and owned and operated Bill Powell’s Clothing Store for 25 years. Lucy did all of the alterations for the store. Lucy was very talented in music and was word organist in the Lovell First Ward for many years. Bill was a vocalist and she accompanied him whenever he sang. He sang and she played the piano for most of the grandchildren’s wedding receptions, funerals and other religious and community celebrations. Lucy is survived by her children: Grant and Linda Dayley of Mesa, Arizona; Gary and Monte Laing of Loa, Utah; Jim and Florence Thomas of Kaysville, Utah; Robin and Lila May of Rock Springs, Wyoming; Mike and Debra Archibald of Kemmere, Wyoming; Roger R. And Vicki Powell; 35 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; a son, John Powell; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. in the Lovell LDS Stake Center, where friends may call for viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 prior to the services. Burial will be in the Lovell City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Lucy Powell.
