Elsinore, Utah – Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Mary Lou Bowyer Gill, age 78, of Elsinore, passed away in the early morning hours of June 20, 2023, in Orem, Utah. She was born June 14, 1936, in Cordova, Alaska, a daughter of Eugene Perle and Alberta Catherine Mosser Bowyer. The family moved to Granite Falls, Washington when Mary Lou was 3 years old. Her father was an electrician and built their home on a 94-acre farm by the river with a quarter of mile sandy beachfront. They developed it into a large dairy farm and in later years a commercial fish farm and hatchery.
Mary Lou attended all her schooling there and graduated from Granite Falls High School, Class of 1954. She was a member of the school band and received the inspiration award on the Trumpet. She was also a member of the Torch Honor Society and was awarded the Elk Scholarship upon graduation. She was also active in the Camp Fire Girls and received the Torch Bearer in Social Leadership, a national award. She spent her summers at Camp Killoqua, training to be a counselor for young girls.
After graduation, she attended Everett Community College and later Simpson Bible College in Seattle, where she worked for the telephone company as a long-distance operator. She then decided to transfer to San Francisco, California and completed her education there at American River College.
She later moved to Sacramento, California where she met Harold Wilton Gill. They were married October 27, 1956, in Reno, Nevada. While living in Sacramento, she worked for United States Postal Service and retired after 31 years of service. During this time, she held many positions, of which at the time of retirement she was the General Supervisor in charge of all week-end operations.
After retirement, they moved to Elsinore where they made their home. She worked in motels, care centers and at Walmart.
Mary Lou has been very active in Christian and Missionary Churches, where she played the trumpet, worked in Children Ministries and was a leader of young people’s ministries.
Mary Lou loved to bowl and has been bowling for the past 40 years, both locally and nationwide. She found great enjoyment in bowling. She has been a member of the WIBC for the past 30 years. She loved to play the piano and played at church and for many funerals in the area.
She is a member of the New Hope Community Church in Richfield where she was pianist and secretary for seven years.
Mary Lou is survived by her son, Sean Michael and Jamie Gill, three granddaughters: Gemma Shay, Angel Luna and Katelyn Hamberalin, all of Tooele; a brother, Bob and Donna Bowyer of Amargaso Valley, Nevada.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Joe Albert Bowyer.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. in the New Hope Community Church, 392 North Highway 118 in Richfield under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
