Melvin Glade Winget

Monroe, Utah - Melvin Glade Winget, age 90, of Monroe, Utah passed away August 29, 2015 in Richfield, Utah. Dad was born September 3, 1924 in Richfield, Utah to Melvin and Jenny Greenwood Winget. Everyone knew our Dad as Glade because his father’s name was also Melvin. Dad spent most of his life in Monroe, with brief absences during his schooling and military service. Dad graduated from South Sevier High School in 1942, then attended Utah State Agricultural College for one year. In October 1943 he answered the call to serve his country in the United States Navy during WWII in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged April 6, 1946. Pulling from one of Dad's journals he said, "About all I can say about the Navy Air Corps and WWII is that I made some good friends, and I flew to hell and back in a PB4Y2 bomber." Dad had begun dating Corinne Evelyn Allison during his junior year in high school. They were married June 3, 1946 in the Manti Temple upon his return from the war. Together they raised three children. Dad's work ethic started way back when. A year before he graduated from high school he leased 40 acres of land. He farmed that ground while helping Grandpa Melvin with the family farm. In 1961 Grandpa gave him 22 acres and Dad bought an additional 38 acres. There is not a time in our lives that we do not remember him working other jobs besides farming. We were taught how to work, why we work, and that hard work is good. Dad worked for South Sevier School District driving bus and later took on the responsibilities of bus supervisor. At the same time, he drove a rural mail route, a job he held for 43 years. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints he served in the following positions: Ward Clerk for two different Bishops, a Counselor to three Bishops, Ward Young Men's President, Stake Young Men's President, Counselor in an Elder's Quorum Presidency, a Seventy, a High Councilman and various scouting positions. He received Scouting’s Second Miler Award and the Silver Beaver Award. He and Corinne served ten years in the Manti Temple. Civic service was also very important to Dad. He was on the Monroe City Council for eight years, Secretary of the Brooklyn Canal Company for over 30 years and held various Lion's Club positions for 60 years including that of District Governor and on the Board of Trustees for the Lions Eye Bank. Glade is survived by his children: David Glade Winget of Richfield, Utah; Debra (LaDale) Mitchell of Ogden, Utah; Pam (Ross) Murdock of Enoch, Utah; along with ten grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Karl, his parents, sister Bertha Nelson, and earlier this year, his loving wife of 68 years, Corinne. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at the Monroe 4th Ward Chapel (49 East 200 North, Monroe, UT). A viewing will be held on Monday, September 7, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Springer Turner Funeral Home (260 North 400 West, Richfield, UT) and on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Church. Burial with military honors accorded by the Monroe American Legion Post #37 and the Utah Honor Guard will be in the Monroe City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
