Neal Christian Torgersen, 81, passed away on September 21, 2010, in Monroe, Utah from complications due to a fractured pelvic bone and Alzheimer’s disease. He was born at the home of his parents, Christian Franklin and Eva Slack Newby Torgersen, on October 7, 1928, in Richfield, Utah Neal was born and raised in the Sevier County. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1946 where he served as Student Body Vice President his senior year. He was called to and served an honorable mission to Norway Oslo Mission. While serving his mission in Haugesund, Norway he met his future wife, Gerd Odlaug Floen (who preceded him in death). They were married in Haugesund, Norway on April 16, 1953 after Neal was released from his mission, but before returning home. Neal and Gerd are the parents of 4 sons, Thomas Neal Torgersen (deceased); Ronald Franklin Torgersen, Palmdale, California; Troy C. Torgersen (Lynne), Monroe, Utah and Torin Olav Torgersen (Janice), Clemmons, North Carolina. They have 11 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. Two weeks after returning from his mission, he was drafted into the US Army where he gladly served his country in Germany for 2 years. While serving in the Army, he achieved the rank of Sergeant. Neal had a love of learning and pursued a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Southern Utah then later obtained a Master’s Degree in Education from Utah State University. He worked his entire career in the Keppel Union School District located in Antelope Valley California. He taught social studies for many years before being given the opportunity to become a principal. He ended his career as an administrator for the school district. He also had a great love of the outdoors, animal wildlife, photography, and hiking. He was a great family historian and worked tirelessly researching and documenting family history. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 1, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Monroe LDS Stake Center located at 140 South Main, Monroe, Utah. Family and friends may call at the Springer Turner Funeral Home in Richfield on Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and at the Stake Center in Monroe from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Monroe City Cemetery under the direction of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Utah.
