Newel A. Nielson

Greenwich, Utah - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and life long friend to many people, Newel A. Nielson, age 94, of Greenwich, passed away December 31, 2007 in Richfield. He was born June 3, 1913 in Koosharem, Utah, a son of Sidney Leonard and Sarah Gertrude Savage Nielson. Newel graduated from North Sevier High School, Class of 1931. He married Alta Mildred Sorenson, March 28, 1940 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Newel was the oldest resident of Greenwich. He was an active member of the LDS Church, serving as Bishop of the Koosharem Ward and in various other positions. He and his wife, Mildred, worked at the Manti LDS Temple as Ordinance workers, which they dearly loved. Newel worked hard as a cattleman, farmer and dairyman. He served as Secretary of the Beaver Creek Irrigation and Reservoir Company since 1947. He was a member of the Grass Valley Grazers Association, Directors on the Parker Mtn. Grazers Association; ASC Committeeman and Farmers Home Administration, and served as a School Board member for 12 years. He is survived by his wife and companion of 68 years, Mildred; children: Dan N. (Evelyn) Nielson, Maxine (Thomas) Talbot, Paul M. (Elva) Nielson, all of Greenwich; DeAnna (LeRoy) Matthews of Hurricane; Jewel Jones of St. George; foster daughter: LaVerne (Casey) Watchman of Crownpoint, New Mexico; 30 grandchildren; 83 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; sister: Mary (Jack) Bosh of Levan; sisters-in-law: Carmel Nielson of Richfield; Wilmoth Nielson of Salina. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Gertie Nielson; step-mother, Vella Riddle Nielson; two great-grandsons: Mason Nielson and Tony Talbot; brothers and sisters: Mazel A. (Melda) Nielson, Gertrude (Larry) Peterson, Ellis Nielson, Barbara (Maurlin) Mickelsen; Arlon J. Nielson; brother-in-law: Floyd Wilson. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 5, 2008 at 12 Noon in the Koosharem LDS Ward Chapel. Friends may call for viewing, Springer Turner Funeral Home in Richfield, Friday evening from 6 to 7 P.M. or at the ward chapel in Koosharem Saturday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 prior to the services. Burial will be in the Koosharem Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah.
