Newell A. Pickett

November 7, 1928 — April 6, 2013

Gunnison, Utah - Our kind and beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, Newell Albert Pickett, age 84, died April 6, 2013 at his home in Gunnison, after a brave and valiant battle with end stage liver disease. He was born November 7, 1928 in Gunnison, a son of John Earl and Lettie LaVern Stevens Pickett. He graduated from Gunnsion Valley High School, Class of 1947. He served an LDS Mission to the Southern States from 1948 to 1950. Newell married Nola Rae Olson, November 3, 1950 in the Logan LDS Temple. He served his country during the Korean Conflict on the front lines in Korea. Newell was an active member of the LDS Church. He and his wife, Nola, served LDS Missions in Lima, Peru; Puerto Rico and Long Beach, California, Spanish speaking. He served 18 years in the Manti Temple and also as a counselor in the Gunnison 3rd Ward Bishopric. He was a faithful Home Teacher. Newel was a member of the Gunnison American Legion Post #104. He enjoyed wood working, mechanics, stained glass, hunting, fishing with his family and enjoyed working on puzzles. He is survived by his loving wife, Nola, of Gunnison; children: Randy and Jacque Pickett of Fayette; Claude and LuEnna Pickett of Ephraim; Terry and Kari Pickett of Cedar City; Mitzi and Brian Chadsey of McAlester, Oklahoma; 25 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; two sisters: Celia Jensen of Centerfield and Edith Tripp of Monroe. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Pickett; a granddaughter, Holly Mosher; 2 great-grandsons; three sisters and three brothers: LaRue Hugo; Jalina Christensen, Owen Pickett; Beryl Christensen; David Pickett and Keith Pickett. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. in the Gunnison LDS Stake Center, where friends may call for viewing Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. or Wednesday morning from 11:30 to 12:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Gunnison American Legion Post #104 and the Utah Honor Guard will be in the Gunnison City Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
