Norman G. Smith

May 24, 1924 — December 7, 2009

Salina, Utah - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Norman George Smith, passed away at UVRMC in Provo, on Monday, December 7, 2009 at the age of 85. Norm was born May 24, 1924 in Springville, Utah, a son of Howard D. and Gertrude Brereton Smith. He was raised and educated in the Springville schools, graduating from Springville High School in the class of 1942. He worked at Boeing Aircraft in California before enlisting in the US Army Corps of Engineers as Pfc. He served through World War II, being discharged in 1945. He married Nadine Harmer, June 1, 1946 in Provo, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple, July 22, 1959. Norm was an active High Priest in both Springville and Salina Wards. He was an active member of the Boy Scout Council in the Springville area for many years. He was a long time employee of WW Clyde Construction Company in Springville, Utah. He loved the outdoors. His favorite activities were outings with his children and grandchildren on 4-wheelers in and around his beloved San Raphael. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and long rides with his wife and friends. Norm is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Nadine, of Salina; his children: Brenda and Gary Swenson of Pleasant Grove; Norman Jeff and Brenda Smith of Springville; his grandchildren: Matt and Dianna Swenson; Brittany and Dave Gray; Amber and Aaron Loosli; Dan and Shelley Swenson; Mike and Suzanna Smith; Shalon and Dustin Peay; Kylee Smith; 21 great-grandchildren; sister, Melba Brady of Oregon. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Don E. Smith and Howard Jerry Smith. The family wishes to thank Dr. John Frischknecht, nurses and staff of UVRMC, for their valiant efforts and loving care. Also a special thanks to Chris Kravits, and the neighbors and friends in Salina for everyday love and support for Norm and Nadine. Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 11, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in the Salina 3rd LDS Ward Chapel, 85 South 100 East in Salina, where friends may call for viewing Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Springville American Legion Post #28 will be Friday afternoon at 3:30 P.M. in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
