Roma Miller Barrus

Monroe, Utah – Our kind and beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Roma Miller Barrus, age 87, of Monroe, Utah, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2023, at the home of her daughter in Monroe, Utah.

Roma was born July 24, 1935, in Driggs, Idaho, to loving parents, LeRoy and Ruth Engberson Miller, on Pioneer Day. She was raised in Cedron, Idaho, a middle child with 3 sisters and two brothers. After graduating from Teton High School and attending a year at Ricks College, Roma Miller married Harrison James Barrus, her true love, on August 10, 1956, in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and together they raised 9 wild children. Harrison preceded her in death November 5, 2019.

Roma was a devoted member of each community she lived in, and her kind heart and selfless spirit touched the lives of many. She loved everyone, especially the underdog. Never did she turn anyone away and would scramble to prepare food for someone walking by the house that she thought was in need, then she would have her children run that food out to them. She could look around a group of people and find the person in most need, and she would find a way to serve them that helped them feel loved. She didn’t want to leave a gathering of people until she had spoken to each person and shared her love with them.

Roma was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings including Stake Primary President, Primary Teacher, Relief Society President, and beloved Scout Leader. She had a deep love of the gospel, and her unwavering faith inspired those around her. She served 4 missions with her devoted husband: a CES Mission to Bangalore, India in 1995: a mission to Baltimore, Maryland in 1999: a mission at Cove Fort, Utah in 2004; and a mission at the Deseret Citrus and Cattle Ranch in St. Cloud, Florida in 2006. They served in the St. George Temple as ordinance workers for 10 years.

Roma returned to Idaho State University in 1982, commuting from Terreton, Idaho (90 miles each way), and graduated in 1983 with a BA degree in Elementary Education, and then received a Special Education Endorsement from SUU in 1989. Roma loved teaching.

Roma’s greatest joy was her family. Every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild thought they were her favorite, and they were all right. She loved every member with all her heart and always said the more people she loved, the greater her capacity to love each one. Her legacy of love, kindness, and devotion will live on through the many lives she touched.

Roma is survived by her children: Harrison Barrus, Roy and Jodi Barrus, Vaughn, and Pam Barrus, Steven and Angela Barrus, Jessie and Kris Hansen, Mary Barrus, Clara and Travis Pickett, Charlotte, and Delmer Hyde, John and Marnie Barrus, 59 grandchildren, and 54 great-grandchildren; her sisters: Zelma Baird, Betty Gibson (John), Christena Murdock, and brother Ken Miller (Clarice).

Roma was preceded in death by her husband and true love Harrison; brother Don; son-in-law Kirk Smith; and grandson Sean Barrus.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 10:00 A.M. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel in Victor Idaho, 87 East Center Street, with burial following at the Cedron Cemetery, 4490 South 4500 West in Cedron, Idaho.
