Russell And Mae Stewart

April 18, 1938 — May 9, 2016

Daymon Russell Stewart, age 78, and Yula Mae Walker, age 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends. He was made comfortable in his home in Salina, Utah, and she received palliative care by the wonderful staff at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah. He died on Thursday, May 5, and his sweetheart followed him on Monday, May 9, 2016. The cause of death for both was unrelated. Russ was born April 18, 1938 to Luther Elvin and Cinda Louise Smith Stewart in Rockholds, Kentucky. He married Ruth Winters Willard in 1957 in Detroit, Michigan. They had two daughters, Margi and Sharron. They later divorced. Mae was born April 9, 1939 to Roy Maynard and Imogene Elisabeth Zindel Walker in Port Angeles, Washington. She married Chester Mike McGhee. They lived in Crescent City, California. They had two daughters, Ruthie and Jeanie. They later divorced. Russ and Mae’s young families were joined together on August 28, 1963 in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1964, they welcomed another daughter, Candi. Their family resided in Las Vegas until 1975, when they moved to Sigurd, Utah. It is here that a deep love and appreciation for animals, nature, and creativity was embedded in their daughters and grandkids. In 1994, they decided to downsize and moved into a cozy little home in Salina, Utah. Together they enjoyed cooking, gardening, and 4-wheeling in the mountains. Russ took great pride in his yard and loved NASCAR and watching westerns. He was a very talented artist who enjoyed woodworking and drawing, but his favorite pastime was creating Native American dream catchers, knives, spears, arrowheads, and such. He also enjoyed visiting with his friends and neighbors. Mae was a people person who had a unique spirit and personality that radiated kindness and joy wherever she went. She worked at JR Munchies in Richfield, Utah for a number of years and looked forward to visiting with the customers every time she worked. Her infectious laugh had an energy that always made you feel welcome. She loved anything to do with nature and could sew ANYTHING! She made dozens of beautiful quilts and afghans for friends and family over the years. Being outdoors always made her happy. She enjoyed the challenge of growing odd plants and flowers and also liked hunting and collecting rocks. Going to yard sales and then sitting down to a cup of coffee with family and her best friend, Zelda, was a perfect start to her day. As a couple, they always made holidays special with hand-drawn cards, homemade treats, beautiful displays, and thousands of Christmas lights. Gifts were always handmade and had a lot of thought, love, and time invested, which made them extra unique and special. They were both one of a kind and will be greatly missed. The family would like to sincerely thank Vicki Gurney and staff at Home Health and the medical teams from Sevier Valley and Utah Valley Hospitals for taking such great care of both of them. They are both survived by their daughters: Margi (Roger) Waters of Kanab; Sharron (Dave) Hales of Farmington, New Mexico; Ruthie Stewart of Faulkner, Kansas; Jeanie Anderson of Salina; and Candi (Mike) Johnson of Salina. Russ’ brother: Jay (Judy) Stewart of Cortez, Colorado and Mae’s brothers: R. Leroy (Fran) Walker of California, Robert "Bobby" (Doris) Walker of California, and Gary (Trish) of California; 12 grandchildren; 19 greatgrandchildren; 6 nieces and 5 nephews. Russ was preceded in death by his parents, Luther Stewart and Cinda (Ray) Cannon; his sister, Ruth Cox; two nieces, Christina Cox and Cinda Cox; and an infant brother, Clifford Melvin Stewart. Mae was preceded in death by her parents, Roy Maynard and Imogene Zindel Walker. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at the Pioneer Cemetery in Salina. Services are under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
