Sammy N. Newton

December 19, 1917 — January 23, 2010

Bicknell, Utah - Sammy Nathan Newton, age 92, of Bicknell, passed away January 23, 2010 at Mountain View Hospital in Payson, Utah. He was born December 19, 1917 in Mona, Utah, the oldest son of Edgar Leon and Nora Jensen Newton. Sammy graduated from South Sevier High School, Snow College, and BYU. He obtained his Administrative Certificate through graduate work at BYU, USU, and the University of Utah. He was in the 8th Air Force during World War II, spending 3 years in England as part of the war effort. He married Myrra Ann Williams, December 27, 1950 in Whittier, California. Their marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple, November 13, 1976. Sammy taught school in Garden City, Utah, North Sevier High in Salina, Utah, and retired as Principal of Wayne High School in Bicknell, Utah after 25 years. He was active in civic and community organizations, including the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Salina and Wayne Wonderland Lions Club in Wayne County. He served as Mayor, and as a board member of Bicknell Town. He was a member of the Capital Reef Natural History Association from its inception. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in many callings, including Elders Quorum President , High Councilor, Bishopric Counselor, Priesthood and Gospel Doctrine teacher, Temple ordinance worker, and Temple Sealer. He is survived by his wife Myrra, sons: Stuart and Terry Newton of Mapleton; Rendell and Joan Newton of Sulphur, Louisiana; daughter: Ellen and Gregg Anderson of Sandy; 11 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brother and sister: Riley and Lois Newton of Salt Lake City; Phyllis and Gary Sorenson of Tremonton. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edgar Mont Newton; a sister and her husband, Crystal Beth and Richard Fausett; and a great-grandson, Caleb Patton. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. in the Thurber LDS Ward Chapel in Bicknell, where friends may call for viewing Wednesday morning from 11:00 to 12:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the Nephi American Legion Post #1 will be in the Mona City Cemetery, Mona, Utah at approximately 4:30 P.M. Wednesday afternoon, under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the doctors and nurses of the Mountain View Hospital Orthopedic Unit for the kindness, care, and consideration given to Sammy during his stay there.
