Stewart Shaver

Richfield, Utah - Earl Stewart Shaver graduated with high honors from this life on May 6, 2021 at the age of 74. He spent the last 6 months of his life bravely battling cancer. He died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. Stew was born on April 3, 1947 in Ottawa, Canada. He immigrated to Los Angeles, California with his parents. He graduated from Birmingham High School in Van Nuys, California. He served a 2 ½ year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Tahiti. He met his sweetheart, Cynthia Freitas, while attending Brigham Young University. They married in the Salt Lake City Temple in December of 1969. They have 6 children. Stew earned a Bachelor’s degree in French History and European Studies from Brigham Young University. He earned a Master’s Degree from Utah State University in Secondary Education and an Administrative endorsement. He began his career teaching Geometry, Science, Spanish and French at Richfield Junior High in 1975. He then taught French, Spanish and Life Science at Richfield High School from 1983 – 2002. In 2002, he became the principal of Cedar Ridge High School. He retired in 2012 after 37 years in Sevier School District. He was elected to serve on the Sevier School District Board of Education where he continued to be involved in the education of children. He assisted Richfield High School Volleyball for 15 years, being the Head Coach for 8 of those years. He officiated boys and girls basketball, softball, volleyball for over 25 years. He served as the Assistant Athletics Director for RHS and while teaching at RHS he oversaw the school’s Sterling Scholar Program, was the French Club Advisor, Chess Club Advisor, Freedom Club Advisor, and could be seen at many athletic events where he ran the books, ran the clock, was the announcer, or took tickets as a volunteer. He worked with the Junior class and oversaw Proms from 1992 – 2002. For most of those years, he served as matchmaker ensuring that girls who wanted to go to the big dance had a date. He served in the Utah Army National Guard as a French Interpreter for the 300th Brigade. He made many missions as an interpreter all over the world. He retired after 25 years having attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was the owner and broker of Richfield Sevier Valley Properties Real Estate firm. He has been an agent since 1977. He was also the owner of Shaver Pest Control. He served on Richfield City’s Planning Commission for 5 years and was the Chairman. He was also a member of a local Post of the American Legion. He has been active in the Boy Scouts of America since he was 8. Education has always been his passion. He put in hours tutoring students at the Richfield Residential Hall. He had a strong commitment to help exchange students learn and thrive in a new environment. He also spent hours mentoring students in an education system that wasn’t designed for them. He was actively involved in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he fulfilled a multitude of callings with deep devotion. Over the past six years he served as a Manti temple worker. He also had a great love for genealogy work. He enjoyed volunteering as the Richfield Senior Citizen bus driver. He was a loyal Cougar sports fan. Stew had a great impact on his family, friends, and community and will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Shaver. His children: Jennifer (Walter) Bankhead, Julie (Kenneth) Nowers, April (Michael) Gluth, James (Tess) Shaver, Nathan (Brandy) Shaver, and Holly (Josh) Galovich; 25 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. His siblings: Ron (Karen) Shaver, Doris Johnson, Brian (Elisabeth) Shaver, and Steve (Yvonne) Shaver. Funeral services will be held Saturday May 15, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. in the Richfield 1st LDS Ward Chapel, 1040 South 400 West in Richfield. Friends may call for viewing Friday from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at the Springer Turner Funeral Home, 260 North 400 West in Richfield. Livestreaming of the services will be available here underneath Stew's obituary about 15 minutes prior to the service. Burial with military honors accorded by the Utah Honor Guard and Sevier Valley American Legion Post #37 will be held in the Annabella Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Homes of Richfield and Salina, Utah
