Richfield, Utah - Valerie Rae Stermer, 59, of Richfield, passed away May 2, 2018 in Utah Valley Hospital after an unexpected, but courageous, battle with various infections. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing. She was born February 19, 1959 in American Fork, Utah, to George Jefferson (Jeff) and Mamie Alena Calton Butterfield of Cedar Fort, Utah. Valerie had a happy childhood growing up in the small town of Cedar Fort, spending countless hours with friends and family, having sleep-outs on the old spring beds, and playing hide and go seek and kick the can. Valerie took good care of her parents and had a very special relationship with them. She loved her dogs, Misty and Samantha, and this love of dogs continued throughout her life. Valerie had many challenges in life, but she was very determined not to let them bring her down. She graduated from Lehi High School in 1977. She served as a visiting teacher in her church wards and took care of many of the widows. She worked hard to be independent and was determined to get married and raise a family. Valerie met George Stermer in 1992 and they were married on June 23,1993 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. George and Valerie made their home in Richfield, Utah and were blessed with two beautiful children, Natalie and Michael. Valerie’s children were the joys of her life. Valerie made many friends in Richfield and was blessed to have a cousin and special friend, Christine Nielson, come into her life. Christine took Valerie and her children under her wing and helped her manage daily life and take care of her family. Christine wrote this about Valerie, “If you ever met Valerie then you knew how special she was. I have had the privilege of her radiant spirit touch my life in ways I never knew were possible. Her smile and presence would light up the world everywhere she went.” Valerie is survived by her children, Natalie and Michael Stermer; her brother Michael (RaeVone) Butterfield; her brother-in-law David Rose; and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband George Stermer; her parents Jeff and Alena Butterfield; and her recently deceased sister Claudia Rose. The reunion with her parents and sister must have been a glorious one. Funeral services will be held Friday May 11, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. in the Springer Turner Funeral Home Chapel in Richfield, where friends may call for viewing from 10:30 to 12:30 prior to the services on Friday. Burial will be in the Richfield City Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
