Vern Deleeuw

August 24, 1914 — May 4, 2003

Vern DeLeeuw Bicknell, Utah - Our beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Hyrum Vern DeLeeuw, age 88, passed away peacefully, early Sunday morning, May 4, 2003 in Richfield, Utah of complications from a fall at his home in Bicknell. He was born August 27, 1914 in Lyman, Utah a son and the oldest child of Hyrum and Anna Kristine Torgerson DeLeeuw. He graduated from Wayne High School Class of 1931, where he was very active in sports, especially boxing and basketball. He was on the winning team that took the first state championship for Wayne High School. He married Lynn Smith Taft, October 24, 1934 in the Manti LDS Temple. She died September 20, 1995. Vern served as Mayor of Bicknell and was on the Town Board. He also served as the Fire Chief for the Bicknell Town Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, water skiing, trap shooting and being in the out doors. Vern was an excellent carpenter and built many homes in the surrounding communities. He enjoyed wood working. Vern was active in the LDS Church. He is survived by his three daughters and their spouses: Joan and Dick Taylor, Fremont; Sharon and Guy Moore, South Jordan; Carolyn and Richard Mattingly, West Valley City; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters: A. Glen and Audrey DeLeeuw, Lyman; Della D. Brian, Loa; Max J. and Genial DeLeeuw, Fay T. and Arlene DeLeeuw, all Sandy; Faun and McKay Bagley, Murray; Betty and Homer Capner, Ogden. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne DeLeeuw. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 9, 2003 at 1:00 P.M. in the Thurber LDS Ward Chapel in Bicknell. Friends may call for viewing at the Springer Turner Funeral Home, 260 North 400 West in Richfield, Thursday evening from 7 to 9 P.M. and at the ward chapel in Bicknell, Friday from 11:00 to 12:30 prior to the services. Burial will be in the Bicknell Cemetery under the direction of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield, Salina and Gunnison, Utah. Online guest book at springerturner.com
