Virgil A. Andersen

Salina, Utah - Our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, Virgil Anthony Andersen, age 93, died October 3, 2013 in Richfield, Utah. He was born November 12, 1919 in Axtell, Utah, a son of Leo Soren and Nancy Eliza Nay Andersen. He graduated from Gunnison Valley High School, Class of 1938. He attended BYU University for two years, where he played in the band and also sang in the chorus, and then was drafted into the US Army, where he served his country during World War II. He also played the cornet in the Army. Virgil married Fern Shurtz, September 24, 1945 in Salina, Utah. They were later divorced. He married Eva King Wood, July 21, 1962 in Elko, Nevada. Their marriage was solemnized in the Provo LDS Temple January 21, 1982. Eva died November 24, 1996. Virgil was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in various positions and activities, including Ward Mission Leader and a worker in the Manti Temple. He was a member of the Salina Jaycees, and the American Legion. Virgil worked as a finish carpenter and helped build many homes throughout the area. He loved baseball and played many years on the Jaycees' team. He was an outdoor person with the love of fishing and hunting. He spent many hours gardening and raising the best tomatoes in Salina. Virgil is survived by his children: Joan and Vandell Wood of Hurricane; Marsha and Tom L. Brant of Farmington; Chad K. and Beverly Wood of Orem; Stephanie and Dan Young of Gunnison; 15 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; a brother, Kent and Rosiland Andersen and a brother-in-law, Dick Sorenson, all of Salina. He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Lance W. Young and Clint A. Young; three sisters and two brothers: Arlene Housekeeper, Melree Andersen, Joyce Sorenson, Duane Andersen and Dean Andersen. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. in the Springer Turner Funeral Home Chapel, 260 North 400 West in Richfield, where friends may call for viewing Saturday morning from 11:00 to 12:30 prior to the services. Burial with military honors accorded by the V.F.W. Sevier Post #5050 and the Utah Honor Guard will be in the Richfield City Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
