Wayne M. Hebertson Md

February 19, 1926 — June 9, 2015

Torrey, Utah - Wayne Madsen Hebertson was born on February 19, 1926 to Thorit Charles and Susan Elmina Madsen Hebertson in Provo, Utah. He attended elementary school in Vineyard, Utah until his father, a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, was activated – transferring the family to Northern California. Wayne attended Modesto High School where he excelled in science, math and football. When he was seventeen-years-old, Wayne joined the U.S. Army as a private and began his basic training at Ft. Benning, Georgia. He was then accepted into Officer Candidate School, and by the age of 19 was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Lt. Hebertson did not experience combat during World War II, but served for two years in the Army of Occupation in Japan after the war. Then he went to jump school and became a member of the 11th Airborne Division. After his military service, Wayne attended Brigham Young University and received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He then attended the University of Utah Medical School, and graduated in 1950. From there, Wayne pursued additional graduate studies in neurology at Harvard University. On December 21, 1956, Wayne married the lovely Joann (Joan) Kearl of Smithfield, Utah. Shortly after their marriage, Wayne sailed with Joan to England to begin his postdoctoral fellowship at the Royal Neurological Institute at Queen’s Square. After completing his fellowship in London, Wayne returned to Boston to begin his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. In the early 1960s, Wayne settled with Joan in Utah to set up his private practice as a neurologist in the Salt Lake area. Dr. Hebertson also served on the staffs of the St. Mark’s, Holy Cross and Cottonwood Hospitals. He eventually became the President of St. Mark’s Hospital. Wayne was a great connoisseur and patron of the arts. He was a frequent donor and attendee of the Utah Symphony, Ballet West and other performing arts; and was involved with the creation of the Salt Lake Arts Center. Wayne was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and skiing. He was a lifelong member of New State Duck Club. After living in their beautiful home on Abinadi Road in Olympus Cove for nearly 35 years, Wayne retired with Joan to his beloved Torrey, Utah - where he enjoyed the last years of his life. Wayne passed away at home on June 9, 2015. He is preceded in death by both of his parents, three of his brothers (Keith M. Hebertson, Leon M. Hebertson, Val M. Hebertson) and his only sister (Joann Thomas). He is survived by his wife Joan Hebertson and their four children: Jonathan Wayne Hebertson (Julie Rudd Hebertson), Elizabeth Hebertson (Michael Jenkins), Andrea Hebertson Luddington (John Luddington) and Peter Christian Hebertson. He is also survived by two brothers (Richard M. Hebertson, David M. Hebertson), nine grandchildren and soon-to-be five great-grandchildren. He was a member of the LDS Church.
