Winifred J. Petersen

November 29, 1923 — July 8, 2016

South Ogden/Torrey, Utah - Winifred Jennens Petersen, age 92, of South Ogden, Utah, passed away July 8, 2016 in South Ogden, Utah, surrounded by her family. She was born November 29, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan, a daughter of Arthur Emil and Winifred Parkinson Jennens. She graduated from Mackenzie High School in Detroit at the age of 16, after being double promoted. During World War II, she worked in labor relations for the Ford Motor Company. She married Alma LeMoyne Petersen, June 7, 1946 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She attended Brigham Young University and Michigan State University, receiving degree in Social Work. She worked as a case worker in social work while her husband was in Dental School. Winifred was an active member of the LDS Church. She held many positions throughout her life, among them was serving as Primary and Relief Society President, Jr. Sunday School Coordinator and Visiting Teaching Coordinator. She served a mission with her husband to West Virginia. She supported the American Cancer Society and helped with neighborhood fundraising. She enjoyed dancing, reading, knitting, crocheting and quilting. She was an excellent seamstress and fashion designer. She enjoyed wool rug braiding and cooking. Mom spent her whole life thinking of and providing for the needs of others. Whether it was as a social worker, a wife, a mother, a neighbor, or in one of her many church callings, she observed where needs were and did her best to help provide for those needs. It was such a major part of her make-up that even when she couldn't remember anything else, she needed to provide something for anyone who came to her room: family, guests, nurses, cleaners, anyone. She felt the need to give of herself, always. We all agree that Mom was the perfect example of true charity. She suffered long and was kind, had no envy, wasn't puffed up, never put herself first, not easily provoked, was truly good and rejoiced in the truth, bore all things, endured all things, hoped for all the best always, especially for others. Winifred is survived by her children: Sandra L. and Brent T. Packer of Gilbert, Arizona; Mejken E. and Brian Theurer of Layton; David L. and Sherri Petersen of South Jordan; Karen L. and Steven Sunday of Enterprise; Janet S. and Ned Mikkelsen of Bunkerville, Nevada, currently serving an LDS Mission in Odessa, Ukraine; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; sisters: Carol Mae Smith of Orem; Dona Fay Comire of Whittier, California; and Shirley Maria Mackey of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Winifred Jennens; a daughter, Lauren Kaye Petersen; her husband, LeMoyne Petersen; three grandchildren: Nicole Petersen, David Brett Petersen, Timothy Lind Petersen; and two brothers: Arthur Edward (Ted) Jennens and Paul Parkinson Jennens. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. in the Layton 28th LDS Ward Chapel, 2505 North Church Street in Layton, Utah, where friends may call for viewing Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 prior to the services. Burial will be in the Huntsville Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
